U.S. Safety Regulator have launched a major investigation into approximately 1.2 million Tesla vehicles following reports of suspension failures that could result in a loss of steering control. The inquiry marks one of the largest safety investigations involving the electric vehicle manufacturer in recent years and could potentially lead to a nationwide recall depending on the findings.
According to Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary evaluation covering certain 2018–2020 Tesla Model 3 and 2021–2023 Tesla Model Y vehicles. The agency’s Office of Defects Investigation said it has received 156 complaints alleging that the front lower lateral link detached from the suspension system, creating the possibility of reduced steering control while driving.
U.S. Safety Regulator noted that most reported incidents occurred without prior warning, although some drivers said they heard unusual noises before the component failed. Despite the seriousness of the reported defect, the NHTSA said it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to the issue at this stage.
The investigation will determine whether the reported failures represent a broader safety defect, how widespread the issue may be, and whether regulatory action, including a mandatory recall, is necessary. Tesla had not issued a public response immediately following the announcement.
2. Investigation Focuses on Suspension Component Failures
The NHTSA’s review centers on allegations that the front lower lateral link, a critical suspension component, can detach from the vehicle. If the part separates while the vehicle is in motion, it could affect steering performance and increase the risk of losing control.

The NHTSA’s preliminary evaluation does not automatically mean a defect has been confirmed.
